Mobile Transfers Peaked Highest in January with 108M Transactions

The month of January 2023 recorded the highest number of mobile money transactions since its inception at 108 million, numbers released by the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBBs) has revealed. This is coming on the back of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) stance on its cashless policy. This peak is also a ripple effect of the naira redesign that has steered more Nigerians to using alternative mode for transactions.   The NIBBS figures showed that a total of 108.135 million transfers were made in the month of January while the value of mobile transactions in September 2022 stood at N2.37 trillion. Analysis of the numbers showed that although the volume of transactions peaked in January, the value of transactions via mobile money declined marginally from N2.48 trillion in December but grew by 44 per cent compared with N1.05 trillion in January 2022. Also, the value and volume of electronic transactions done through the Nigeria Inter Bank Settlement System Inst...

CBN defies Supreme court-- Old naira notes no longer legal tender

In defiance of the Supreme Court order, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, declared that the old naira notes of N200, N500 and N1000 have ceased being legal tender in Nigeria since February 10, 2023. Old naira notes remain legal tender – Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has said its February 8 order barring the Federal Government and its agencies from enforcing the February 10 deadline for the use of old 200, 500 and 1000 naira notes still subsist. The court made the clarification on Wednesday following complaint by lawyer to Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara states, Abdulhakeem Mustapha (SAN) that the Fed Govt and its agencies have failed to comply with the order and have allegedly directed the rejection of the old notes. Mustapha said the plaintiff filed a notice of none-compliance with the order of the court order made on February 8. And demanded that the court take action against the respondent to protect the dignity of the court. He added: “That order has been flouted by the government. We are talking of executive lawlessness here. We have filed an affidavit to that effect…We want the court to renew the order for parties to be properly guided.”

Report: Dani Alves has confessed that he did indeed penetrate the woman who accuses him

The legal situation of Dani Alves is getting worse every day, and is that the former player of Pumas and Barcelona, now a Spanish journalist revealed that the Brazilian confessed that if there was penetration to the 23 year old girl who has sued him, so now justice has more arguments to go against the accused. The alleged confession of Dani Alves "He has recognized that the sexual act was consummated through penetration", were the statements of Carlos Quílez, journalist of Antena 3 of Spain. In case the information is true, it is already the fourth time that Dani Alves changes his statement, and that will play against the Brazilian player. All the versions that Alves had given until he confessed the penetration, were to hide the infidelity to his wife, the model Joana Sanz, who recently visited him in the Brians 2 prison in Barcelona. With this possible confession, the Brazilian's lawyers have to change the strategy and will focus on the fact that the act was with the ap...

Real Madrid 'lining up bid for Borussia Dortmund's Karim Adeyemi'

Real Madrid are considering signing Borussia Dortmund striker, Karim Adeyemi to provide cover for Karim Benzema. That is according to Okdiario’s chief pundit, Eduardo Inda, who made the claims while speaking on El Chiringuito. Inda said that Real Madrid are looking at Adeyemi, who was born in Munich, Germany, to a Nigerian father and Romanian mother, as the player who can replace Benzema in the near future at Santiago Bernabeu. “Real Madrid are following many forwards. The need to have someone to replace Benzema was seen at the Bernabeu against Real Sociedad. When the turnaround comes, there’s a goal, there is that Madridista gene, but they need a second striker,” Inda said. “[They are] obviously not going to sign a star because they’ll come when Haaland’s clause can be executed. “Madrid are looking at a Borussia Dortmund striker. He’s a player who can play various positions up front. This is Karim Adeyemi.”

Atiku: Bullion vans must not determine election result

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, on Sunday, urged Nigerians not to allow the results of the 2023 presidential election to be determined by “bullion vans.” In a newsletter sent to our correspondent, the former vice-president and serial presidential candidate urged Nigerians to channel frustrations accrued from the scarcity of naira and fuel to vote out the ruling All Progressives Congress. “A few days ago, I had cause to make a statement on the currency conversion policy of the federal government. In the said statement, I aligned my position with an upsurge of demands for a slight extension of the January 31 deadline. “While commending the magnanimity of the CBN for such an extension, it would be pertinent for the agency to take urgent measures and make the new currency available and accessible to the public. This is necessary to ease the ongoing hardships and frustration that have become manifest in our people across the country.” Speaki...
